Chart 1 shows the estimated number of people using Internet worldwide from 1995 to 2002. The total number of people was steadily on the increase without any slight decline. Starting 26 millions in 1995, the number of people increased to 580 millions which is almost 22 times more than those who were in 1995. That means internet was spread beyond our imagination. Especially the year in 1990 was the most outstanding period recorded conspicious increase among the whole data-as many as 256 millions. On the other hand, the year which recorded the least increase was 1996.
Chart 2 shows the proportion of internnet users in the world in 2003. It can be classified generally with 6 continents or countries ; USA and Canada, South America, Europe, Middle East, Asia/Pacific, and Africa. USA and Canada ranked at the top of the list accounting for 53%. The gap between first and second country in the list was quite huge. Europe followed the next as 24%. The total amount of users in Middle East and Africa was merely 2%. Asia, the continent where involves Korea ranked third in the world for the nation's level of access to information technology (IT), represented only 15%.
Overall, these two charts proved that the number of people using internet worldwide is closely connected to the standard of living and the population of a country. Actually when it comes to the Internet, not many nations are more wired than South Korea. However the figure of Asia including Pacific was simply below in rank compared to America or Europe continents. In addition, computer is needed to get access to internet, in countries where people cannot afford to buy a computer, internet wasn't popular at all.
