OP 5 Benefits and limitation of online learning applications for English education.
Learning English through the on-line is considered to be one of the most innovative methods in Korean Education recently. Thanks to the wide distribution of the internet access most of the students nowadays seem to have chances of learning through the educational programs offered on line. There are some drawbacks of on-line learning, however, it is beneficial ,in many ways, to the English education in our country.
First of all, on-line learning makes it possible for students to obtain equal opportunities to access the high quality education, especially for those who are otherwise unable to take those lessons due to the high cost or other restrictions they are facing. Since the lessons offered by on-line usually cost less than off-line classes, students who can’t afford expensive lessons of noted institutions or teachers can learn with low tuition fee. On-line learning seems to be one of the essential methods that will accomplish equality in English education in Korea.
Secondly, on-line learning is so convenient and time-efficient. Students can take the lessons regardless of the time and place without moving in and out to take the lessons. It is true that students are spending lots of their precious time to commute to private institutions everyday. On-line studying, however, eliminates the need to waste the time on the road, and they can devote themselves to study whenever they want, for all they need is turning on the computer and clicking on the program.
Nevertheless there are also some drawbacks we might encounter during on-line lessons. First, since there is no supervisor near students, especially in case of young children, it is relatively easy to be distracted while studying. The lecturer in a pre-recorded on line program is not able to adjust their lessons according to the leaning atmosphere. In addition, although internet has widely spread throughout the country, still students living some of the poor areas in the cities or remote islands don’t have the access to the internet, and consquently, they can be discriminated by the system compared to those having the access to the on-line study.
It seems that more and more students are getting benefits from the on-line studies, whether its private educational session or the public school settings. Despite several disadvantage of on-line learning, it is clearly beneficial for the future Korean English education since it is time and cost-effective way of learning and offer equal chances to learning English for those who are from the lower class.
