The Korean government has suggested that Korean secondary school English teachers should be able to conduct their classes entirely in English by 2012.

Do you support this proposal? Why or why not? Support your opinion with clear reasons, details and examples.



The faster the world is globalized, the greater spotlights go to English. Naturally English became the way to communicate with the world. Following this phenomenon, Korean new government announced that from 2012, secondary school English teachers should be capable to teach English in English. However, I am quite skeptical to this policy. English is completely different from Korean in grammar or sentence structure. Thus to second language learners, to asian students at the same time, it needs to be taught in mother tongue at the beginner level. Learning English in English from the stage students don't know English anything but several expressions can depreciate student's interests toward English and make students sick of it. Besides, the infrastructure of professioinal English teacher who can teach English to secondary school students won't be prepared to the time for the newly announced policy.

Of course there are students who have been getting contact with English gradually and continuously through various sources. Like private academy called 'Hakwon', private tutor, or studying abroad. However it's for the story of extremely little number of students. Most of the common Korean secondary school students are not eligible for TEE class when they enter secondary school. It doesn't seems that the students who are in such a level can manage English classes taught by TEE. In addition, there definitely are some students who can fully understand TEE class and leads the class actively. Seeing those students, not qualified students can think themselves of losers. Some Korean newspaper researched that the wealth comes from the English ability in Korean society. The key thing is student's English ability is more noticable between rich and poor families. Because of this social phenomenon, government suggested this new policy, but it can make the current sicuation worse than now.

Moreover, even the new policy is activated, there are not enough teachers who can manage and handle TEE class in secondary school. Because current English teachers in middle school are appointed according to completely different format from the new TEE policy, it is doubtful that they can teach English in English realizing the original purpose of TEE class. Maybe it would be resting on mimicing TEE class and degrading the effectiveness of English class. The teacher's education system is changed before the studet's education system is changed. By the time 2012, it is impossible to grow suitable teacher for TEE class. The government say that they will recruit people who got TESOL as English teacher. It is the comments which think education is just the way to put knowledge into students' head. Teacher's job is not only teaching English but also other things related with student's school life. That's the reason why pedagogics are essential courses in teacher's college.

The acute prescription makes worse results in the end. Education doesn't show short-term result. It goes during student's lifetime. Thus the old said that Education should be far-sighted national policy. However, because of awkward amendment which is changed every 5 years whenever the president or minister is changede, the system cannot be supported strongly. This time was the same. New president's highly motivated amendment not considering the current situation results chaotic situation. Students are urged to prepare TEE class before entering secondary school and not-prepared teachers cannot handle the new class system. If the current government can gain momentum and propel their decent purpose, it will work. Still if not, it will be nothing but a failure.

As you wrote your essay against TEE Policy, it is intersesting for me to share your ideas. I agree with your thoughts. As the setting in public school is not prepared to be implemented this policy, there is a lot to consider and think. What you pointed out is the major problems , I think and government should take proper steps for them

Thus to second language learners, in other words asian students, it needs to be taught in their mother tongue as they are in the beginner level. Learning English in English from the stage students don't know English anything but several key expressions can reduce student's interests toward English and make students get sick of it. Besides, the desirable number of professioinal English teacher who can teach English in English won't be matched until the time for the newly announced policy.
