[OP9] Teachers open the door. Students enter by themselves Empty [OP9] Teachers open the door. Students enter by themselves

A noted professor of English Education in Korea uses this motto in his email signatures: “Teachers open the door. Students enter by themselves.”

What do you think is meant by this? Do you agree or disagree with it? Use reasons and examples to support your opinion.

As soon as I read above sentence, other one comes to my mind: don't catch a fish, but teach how to fish. I think both of them means self-study. These days, self-study is emphasized. Like these sentences, a teacher teaches student knowledge or rules. It's a student who applies them, and a teacher can't force him/her to do. I totally agree with above sentence.

The first reason I agree with is that teacher is just guide or facilitator. That is, a teacher is a study helper. He/ she just casts knowledge, and students acquire it. Teaching methods or principles enables students to get more information. They can adapt what they learn to other field. In addition, when they learn by themselves, it is true that they know something. For example, my English teacher said to me that she was just helper. Therefore, we must not depend on her teaching. She could give us many expressions and knowledge, but it was us who acquired and used them.

The second reason is that students have to be able to use what they learn beyond a class. This is genuine reason of learning. For example, the reason to learn English is that we want to use it in society. If we want to learn English to use in a class, we don't need to do our best. Here is one more example. In math, usually a teacher explains how to solve. If a student mimics the way that a teacher solves a question, it is not true study.

In conclustion, self-study is very important, and teachers try to lead their students to study by themselves. Actually, most Korean students are dependent on an academy or private institution. I think that it is better to study by oneself and it is useful to develop one's growth.

My opinion is same like you.
It’s important for students to study by themselves, and the role of teachers is to help them to do self-study.
At first it might be difficult for students to have autonomy in studying, but as time goes by, that kink of instruction will make the best result, I think.
