Essay question 4:
Describe the kinds of skills required to become good at speaking in English.

Korean's deep interest and passion in English language education have been increasing in recent years. English has become one of the most global languages. The number of Korean students studying have been increasing every year. Most of the students in Korea has problem with English speaking. They need to learn communicative language skills. I think there are two elements to become good at speaking in English.

Firstly, they need more effective English training programs and an after-school class for extracurricular activities such as English speaking class for students. Until now, Korean students focus on entrance examination and learn English from books. And they spend most of the time to learn vocabulary and a grammar. That improve students reading skill but that make students speaking skill lower. When teachers make new programs like once a week English speaking class in a group with several games, student will certainly have fun during the class and they will improve their speaking skill. As far as the kinds of training programs are concerned, they should be more specifically divided into different levels of training; such as basic course through middle course, high level course.

Secondly, teachers should use English in the class all the time. Of course, the best way is having native American teacher in the class, but it is difficult to hire so many native speaking teachers. Using only English in the English class could improve student's listening skill, but it could make teachers to be under the stress. However for students listening often English will give them a good experience in their life. When students listen enough and catch what the speaker is saying, they can imitate and learn how to speak. And also that can motivate student to want to speak English.

Therefore when teachers will make different English level classes between students and start to use English during the class, the improvement of student's speaking ability will achieve in the future.

Hi Eunsil,

Thanks for posting your essay in response to this topic.

Looking back at some of your earlier writing efforts, I can see clear improvement in your ability. You've certainly structured your writing in amuch more organized way and shown you can explore ideas with good supportive detail.

Generally speaking, this is a very good attempt at a categorization essay. There is a good context-building hook in the introduction, and your body pargraphs are generally oriented around good clear paragraphs. The first paragraph appears to present more than one category, so you might like to think of a more effective grouping mechanism.

For a non-timed task of this nature, I think you could have produced three categories to explore in the body rather than just the two. Your introduction should have introduced the categories themselves, and the conclusion ought to pull the ideas back together in some kind of rationalized way.

However, as I said earlier, you are making clear progress, and that is great to see.

Below you will find some language development suggestions:

Cool The number of Korean students studying has been increasing every year

Cool Until now, Korean students have focused on their entrance examination and learning English from books. In addition, they spend most of their time learning vocabulary and grammar. These things can improve students' reading skills, but it can reduce the opportunity to develop speaking skills.

Cool Of course, the best way is having native American teachers in the class, but it is difficult to hire so many native speaking teachers [NOTE: Native American is usually used to refer to America's Indians, and do you mean only American teachers? Oh no - I'm Australian! Should I be excluded?]

Keep up the good efforts and you will continue to improve!

Best of luck,

~ Jason

It is a bit off the topic, but I wanted to say that your picture is like an artistic picture.
I like that very much.
Your suggestion for after-shool activity will be really beneficial to those who can't afford to go to a private language academy.
