Personal Journal 5: Causes of School violence

Last year, Mr.Cho’s indiscriminate and fatal gun shooting towards other students on campus in America drove all Koreans into shock and awakened the seriousness of school violence. Although this kind of extreme violence with a gun involving massacre didn’t take place in Korea yet, school violence has existed and become a critical issue in school settings. In particular, bullying called Igime is common among young students and caused many social problems. In the journal of this week, I’d like to examine the causes of school violence from individual, school, and social perspectives.

To begin with, an individual factor of students as causes of violence in schools comes into play. Some students have aggressive personality trait which may be influenced by their parents’ erroneous way of raising children or other harmful social environments. This individual personality defect can be attributed to the school violence because those who have that kind of abnormal and dangerous personality tend to have difficulty with socializing with their friends and easily become irritated and attack other students when they are provoked by someone. Furthermore, they are not conscious of their wrongdoings since they lack ethical and moral values about their behaviors and sometimes repeat violence without the pang of conscience. Plus, their uncontrolled and rebellious temper can lead to destructive behaviors for their sake without hesitation.

Next, school is also responsible for students’ violent behaviors. One of the goals of most schools, which correspond to that of parents, is to push their students into entering the prestigious universities. Therefore, inordinate competitive atmosphere between students in school has been formed, which accordingly not only puts students under a great stress but stirs their self-centered mind to win against other peers rather than help and collaborate with one another. This may discourage students who are poor at studying but good at other fields from developing their talents. Furthermore, school’s too much focus on academic development means the lack of education on culture of esthetic sentiments. Owing to this unbalanced education, students’ emotion become barren and they can show violent actions when they are faced with problems.

Finally, a social factor is involved in school violence as well. Modern industrial society gave birth to the phenomenon of alienation of human beings and weakened the solid bond among individuals in a community, hence came a confusion of a value system and inhumane relationships between people. Therefore, it became prevalent for people to resort to violent and illegal means to solve problems. Added to that, increased noxious and violent programs offered by mass media can cause young students to imitate the violent actions. According to a report, adolescents are apt to consider the violent actions which are glorified on TV or movies to be heroic and mimic them just out of curiosity. By this, adolescents can become desensitized in exercising violence through repeated imitation.

To sum up, many factors such as individual, school, social aspects are engaged in causing school violence. They are individual aggressive personality, school’s emphasis on competitiveness and neglect on students’ emotions, and harmful social environment. These complex elements have a huge impact on the students’ deviated behaviors involving violence. Therefore, it is hard to determine what the main cause for a specific violence is. I’ll discuss what things can be done to solve the problems of school violence in the following journal.

A few years ago, I watched TV program which was shown school violence problem. I was shocked because young students are cruel and the problem is really serious than I had imagined. Nowdays, Students are exposured to violence from internet games, movie and TV seriously. We need powerful restraint about these things.
