There are two approaches of teaching learners how to speak English. In the listening paragraph, it tells about a standard approach called PPP. These 3 Ps consist of presentation, practice and production. On the other hand, the speaker suggests a modern way of approach called 4 As: awareness grazing, appropriation, autonomy.

While the 1st P in the PPP approach presents learners the language first, mainly about functional, grammatical use of the language. Then, they are given some situations that the language can be applied. What is different from the 1st A in the 3 As is that awareness grazing presents real conversation situation to highlight the key language. After that, learners get to understand, notice the language usage. In other words, the speaker points out that learners can learn how to speak English from the actual input.

Next, in the listening passage, second P in PPP approach implies practice, which involves controlled application of the language, suc as drills, gap fillings. Compared to this, the speaker shows how appropriation works. The key difference between P and A is the degree of controlled application. In appropriation stage, learners first start from controlled application of the language, and then they face less controlled application, while in practice stage, they just practice the controlled language usage. However, these two approaches have something in common: learners are still guided and given a framework.

Lastly, the third P in the PPP, according to the listening passage, is aimed at teaching learners to produce the language on their own judgement. On contrary, the speaker goes on to point out that the third A in the 3As refers autonomy. It is to let the learners use the language spontaneously, without being artificial, and this can be achieved by the learner independently. On this stage, teachers help learners sith appropriation to develop their autonomy; teachers open the way and the learners get to know how to speak English naturally. This is definitely different from the production stage on the point that production stage is not only but a presentation of key language.
