Many of koreans learn english; In fact anyone who are being educated must have the experience of learning english. What can Korean people benefit from English? In most of the cases, English seems to bring success as an individual in Korean society. Then, what kind of advantage English brings to Korea as a nation?

First of all, we need to focus on that english is an official language in international conference, that is, we have to know how to use English not only as a means of communication but also claiming our right as a nation. It is unlikely that we deliver exactly what we want to purport in foreign language, if we are not capable of using that language. A minor communication problem in a negotiation between two countries, which could not be recognized at that moment, might breed misunderstanding of each other nations. It is hopeful when the nations have chances to revise the terms; however, the problem will deteriorate when there's no chance to reverse. This will possibly worsen the relationship between the two country. To hold our justifiable right as a nation and keep in good relationship with other countries, English is necessary.

Secondly, using english has good effect on korean economy. To find a larger market abroad, a certain language is required. If companies have the ability of commanding English, they may branch out English-using country including the US. America is a large market itself. Therefore, there are lots of chances to create extensive demands, especially in information technology or electronics fields. It's possible to expect stimulation to economy by boosting sales. On that point, English acts as a strong point since it provides with more possibility to expand market share and finally aids korean economy.

Last but not least, English will play an important role to give Korea wider publicity. As english is worldwide language, using english means that we have another tool to communicate with foreigners. Also, it will be helpful to attract tourists from all over the world. They might find Korea more comfortable and friendly to travel around. Further, English gives chances to spread our unique traditions. There are pretty interesting folklores that will surely draw visitors' attention; however, they are not yet discovered by the visitors because of the language barrier. Our tradition is beautiful and worthy; if we share ours with more people, it will have much greater value.

To sum up, English is one of the ways to enhance our global competitiveness. It helps Korea to assure its fair position as a nation in international society, and it also allows to enliven Korean economy. Moreover, English works as a method of public relations of Korea as a nation. All in all, English has significant influence on Korea from various aspects, in a positive way.
