OP6 : In what ways do you think native and local teachers can team up to provide effective and motivating English instruction in public school settings?
These days, more and more native speaking teachers are being recruited into the public school system. To provide effective and motivating English instruction in public school settings, there need to consider ways that native and local teachers can team up.
There can be more effective result from English emersion system, if native and local teachers team up well. Recently as new President is inaugurated, English emersions system, considered as one of new educational policies, is suggested. It’s much better to teach English with native speaking teacher than for local teachers to teach alone. In students’ situation, they may accept the class differently. Being with foreigner itself may make students feel like “I’m taking really English class.”
Nowadays in middle and high school, most English classes are grouped by ability. There are some students who understand the class taught in 100% English but in reality there are more students who have difficulty in taking the class. . If English is taught by only English, students can have rejection. I come to know the fact during this student-teaching practicum. If native and local teachers teach together, students’ understanding can improve because Korean teachers help them as a role of an assistant.
Also cultural things between Korea and western countries are different in some ways so the class keeps students from misunderstanding by two teachers. Besides, students learn various background knowledge having global and long-sighted thoughts.
There are many alternatives for English education. Teaming up with native and local teachers is one of the ways. It takes long time to make ideal English class which we expect and hope. Thus we should consider and develop teaching ways continuously to provide effective and motivating English instruction in public school settings.
